Work at North Dakota State University's Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute is getting a boost through two $3.5 million federal grants.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Work at North Dakota State University's Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute is getting a boost through two $3.5 million federal grants.

The money is among 22 grants awarded nationwide through the federal Transportation Department's Research and Innovative Technology Administration.

One grant is for an NDSU-led effort called the Mountain-Plains Consortium that involves seven other universities including South Dakota State. Work will range from developing techniques to extend the lives of bridges to improving transportation planning for Indian reservations.

The second grant was one of only two awarded nationally to focus on public transportation. NDSU will work with three other schools.

NDSU will receive about $2 million total from the two grants.
