Johnson, Jimmie men solid in Fargo

The Jimmies ran into some serious competition Saturday, but still managed to hold their own.

The Jimmies ran into some serious competition Saturday, but still managed to hold their own.

Ed Crawford’s JC men’s team notched five top 5 finishes against primarily NCAA Division I and II competition at the Bison Open in Fargo.

The Jimmies were led by senior Jarann Johnson, who continued his sparkling season with a second-place finish in the 400. He posted the mark despite not even running in the fastest heat, but still ran a huge lifetime best of 50.74 seconds.

“Jarann ran a phenomenal race for us. Really, he had a great, great day and has been very consistent all indoor season,” Crawford said of the Redding, Calif., native. “He’s doing some amazing things for us as a senior.”

Johnson also ran a split of 49.45 as the Jimmies’ 4x4 relay team had another strong race. Johnson, Trent Roemmich, Nathan Christensen and Brent Jansen finished third to only NDSU and UND, and they nearly edged North Dakota, 3:24.10 to 3:24.36.

“Those guys did a really nice job,” Crawford said.

All four of them also had solid individual performances.

It was par for the course for Roemmich, who was fifth in the 60 hurdles behind two NDSU runners, one from Northern State and one from Dickinson State. Roemmich is just .10 off qualifying for nationals.

“Another good, solid race from Trent,” Crawford said. “He’s been real consistent. He does a nice job.”

Same is certainly true of former Blue Jay Spencer Kamoni, who made it 4-for-4 in PRs in the 800 (1:57.66). He missed qualifying by just .41 seconds and the four guys ahead of him all run for D-I schools.

“He ran a phenomenal race. It seems like I’ve said that a lot about him, but it’s true,” Crawford said.

Matt Johnson, another former JHS athlete, had another nice triple jump, coming in fifth at 42-2.50.

Jansen was seventh in the 200 (23.27), while Mike Findlay led the throwers, placing seventh in the shot (47-0.25).

The Jimmie women were short-handed due to injury and illness. But Madey Hornung was there and ran well, again.

The senior from Jamestown ran a time of 2:2.24 in the 800 — good for fourth, just .74 short of qualifying. She trailed only NDSU and UND runners.

“Madey ran a good race and the completion was great,” JC women’s coach Jim Clark said.

Hornung also ran the Jimmies’ top split in the 1600 relay of 62.3. The Jimmies were sixth in that race (4:14.90). Stephanie Erlandson, Taylor Miller and Alyssa Sanders ran the other three legs.

Jolynn Warnes was seventh in the 60 hurdles (9.68), a personal best, after placing second in the heptathlon on Friday. She also PRed in the triple (34-3.50).

Kayla Byle, who also competed in the multi on Friday, ran a PR of 2:31.16 in the 800.

It was an off meet otherwise, though.

“We were missing a couple of people with illness and injury and we had a few that just did not have very good performances,” Clark said.

Mallory Johannes was eighth in the high jump (5-2.25), tying her career-best.

Sanders (61.99) and Erlandson (63.18) ran season-bests in the 400.

Taylor Miller’s 27.39 in the 200 was her best so far and her 63.91 in the 400 came in her debut in the race.

In the 800, Miranda Charley’s 2:38.48 was a season-best.

Kaia Bickford, from LaMoure, pole-vaulted over 7-6.50, while Josie Bopp of Oakes cleared her first height ever in the vault (7-0.50).
