Jays finish fourth: Fossum wins all-around, Minot wins team title

Minot co-head gymnastics coach Dr. Marisa Upton says her team still has a little untapped potential.
If so, then the Majettes are a week away from their fourth straight state championship.
Minot had four of the top 15 all-around scores en route to a sparkling 147.075, more than a half-point ahead of Dickinson, the only team in the state that could possible dethrone them.
“This was a good night for us. The girls did well,” Upton said. “But I do think there is still a little left. We got one week and one more meet to see if we can bring it all the way out.”
Dickinson’s Acacia Fossum enjoyed her return to Jamestown, winning the all around (37.950) and floor exercise (9.825), just under a calendar year since winning a state title for the Midgets at Jerry Meyer Arena.
The Midgets had four all-conference all-arounders and finished at 146.400.
Bismarck finished third (144.225) and the home-standing Blue Jays fourth. Their score of 142.500 was certainly more than respectable, but overall they weren’t as sharp as the last couple of meets.
“We were a little off,” said coach Dave Tews. “It wasn’t a bad day by any means, but our depth wasn’t quite as good as it has been.”
The Blue Jays faltered slightly on the bars and beam, both scores were sub-35s, while the third-place Demons went over 36 on everything but beam.
“If we did anything on bars and beam we’re right there with them,” Tews said. “You look ahead to next week, we can do better and hopefully we will and that would put us in pretty good shape.”
Alex Lind posted the second-best floor mark with a 9.7, trailing only Fossum. The JHS junior star was also fourth on bars (9.575) and overall (36.925).
The Blue Jays had five of the top 20 all-around scores. The top 20 in each event and the top 15 all around earn all-conference.
Mercedes Westereng tied for fourth (9.55). Carly Nelson (9.375) was 10th, Erin Hillerud 18th (8.95) and Ashley Kronebusch 20th (8.8).
Westereng finished tied for ninth in all around (36.175). Abbie Conlon had a top 20 in the beam, tying for 19th (8.4).
Bismarck had the winners on vault (Mackenzie Keidel) and bars (Kaylee Keller). Minot’s Payton Ringoen won beam and teammate Misha Taylor was the Senior Athlete of the Year.
All five teams will be in Dickinson next weekend for the state meet, which begins with the team competition on Friday.
