N.D. officials to wait on No Child waiver

North Dakota education officials aren’t likely to apply until later this year for a waiver from the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind law.

BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota education officials aren’t likely to apply until later this year for a waiver from the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind law.

The state chose not to apply before a deadline last fall and will not apply by the second-round deadline at the end of this month. However, Assistant State School Superintendent Bob Marthaller told The Bismarck Tribune that the state is targeting a third deadline in the fall.

States are being allowed to opt out of the No Child Left Behind law if they meet certain requirements including developing alternative standards. Marthaller says a North Dakota committee still has work to do.
