Optimist Clubs cites athletes for awards

Carly Nelson and Zane Braun of Jamestown High School and Jamestown College’s Mallory Johannes and Matt Johnson have been named Athletes of the Week by the Jamestown Optimist Club.
Nelson, a senior on the JHS gymnastics team, had a career-high mark of 9.375 on the floor exercise at the West Region meet. She is qualified for state in all five events.
Braun, a junior wrestler for the Blue Jays, won the state championship at 152 pounds in Bismarck last weekend. Seeded fifth, Braun beat the No. 4, 1 and 2 seeds in the tournament. He had two pins, a 17-2 victory and was leading 8-2 in the championship when his opponent had to medically default.
Johannes, a senior from Sartell, Minn., on the JC women’s track team, won the high jump with a mark of 5-1.75 at the Bemidji Twilight meet Feb. 16. She also ran a leg on the 4x400 relay.
Johnson, a freshman from Jamestown on the JC track team, won the triple jump (43-5) and placed second in the long jump (20-5) in Bemidji. Both jumps were career-bests.
