An 18-year-old Valley City, N.D., man died in a Thursday crash, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

The accident happened at about 11:50 p.m. on Eighth Avenue Southwest, in Valley City, one mile south of Interstate 94.

Dillon Kapaun was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Eighth Avenue traveling on three wheels as the front left wheel assembly has been broken off in a crash in Valley City minutes before the fatal crash.

A Valley City police officer saw the vehicle and attempted to stop it, but the pickup continued southbound and entered the east ditch.

It struck an approach and vaulted before landing south of the approach and striking a utility post, causing it to spin and roll.

The driver was extricated from the pickup and transported to Mercy Hospital in Valley City, then airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Fargo where he died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The Valley City Police Department, patrol and Barnes County Ambulance responded.

The crash remains under investigation by the patrol.
