Marler hits the mark: JHS senior regains regains pool record in 50, 100 free
Jamestown’s Willy Marler set some high goals for Saturday’s West Region meet.
Jamestown’s Willy Marler set some high goals for Saturday’s West Region meet.
So high, in fact, no other swimmer had ever done it.
But if Marler has proven anything in his time at JHS, it’s that if he sets his sights on something, he typically sees it through, especially when it comes to swimming.
And Saturday was no different.
Marler, after watching both of his 50 and 100 freestyle pool records get beaten earlier this year, got both back at Saturday’s West Region meet at the JHS pool — finishing with times of 21.53 in the 50 and 48.13 in the 100.
“It was really great,” said Marler, who is the reigning state champion in the 100 free. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years. Since I was a sophomore and started sprinting, it has been my goal to get those records.”
Marler topped previous record-holder Ben Bolinske of Williston, who set the old marks earlier this year in a dual with Jamestown.
On Saturday, however, Bolinske was no match for Jamestown’s standout sprinter.
“It’s kind of like revenge,” said Marler, who set a new West Region record with his 50 time. “It was great to come out and get it.”
Bolinske, who was named the West Region’s Senior Athlete of the Year, finished second in both events.
“He did very well,” said JHS coach Ben Smith of Marler’s day. “He did what he wanted to do. We still have a week to go, so we’re going to keep working hard because we have more things to accomplish.”
For Marler, it wasn’t all individual goals he accomplished. He also helped the 200 freestyle relay set a new school record with a time of 1:33.22 — good enough for fourth.
“That was both a season best and a school record,” said Smith, who was named the co-West Region Coach of the Year with Bismarck’s Loic Joseph. “That was pretty cool to see.”
Minot ran away with the team title with a score of 518 — over 170 points ahead of second-place finishing Bismarck Century.
“It was an exciting (West Region) meet,” said Minot coach Jake Solper. “There were a lot of good races and a lot of great athletes out there. It was great to watch all the races transpire this weekend.”
But behind the Magicians, it was a tight race for the rest of the West Region.
The Blue Jays, in their final home meet of the year, were in second place after nine events. In those final two events, however, Jamestown fell down to sixth with a score of 235.
“It was a rollercoaster,” Smith said. “It’s fun when teams are really close together like that.”
Jamestown got a third-place finish out of Hunter Munson on the diving board and two of the three relays finished in the top 5.
Colt Rasmussen also notched a couple of fifth-place finishes in the 200 and 500 frees. Rasmussen, Marler and Munson were all named to the all-West Region team.
“Everyone really stepped up today,” Smith said. “We had people getting in the top 16 left and right.”
The season concludes at the state meet in Mandan, which begins Friday.
“Our times weren’t necessarily off the charts, but it shows us where we’re at right now,” said Solper. “We did some improving, but we know we still have some room for improvement as well.”
