Lind leads Blue Jays at state meet

Alex Lind came within 34 1000ths of a point of state champion status on Saturday.

The Jamestown High School junior capped off another big season with a strong state meet, placing third in the all around and second on the floor.

Lind’s typical day led a nice finale to the season for the Blue Jays, who posted a 143.617, even though team scores aren’t kept.

“The kids did well,” JHS coach Dave Tews said. “I can’t complain. There’s always things you look back at to maybe place a little higher, but overall, it was a pretty good way to finish the season.”

Most year Lind’s sparkling 9.833 on floor would have done the trick, but Dickinson star Acacia Fossum was in the last rotation and delivered a 9.867 to take top honors. Fossum, as she did in Jamestown last February, won the all around title, narrowly edging out Mackenzie Keidel of Bismarck, 38.283 to 38.217.

“Virtually every year (9.833) would get the job done,” Tews said of Lind’s floor score. “Her routine was really nice. It was pretty much spot-on.”

The floor was the best event as usual for the Jays.

Carly Nelson posted her third straight personal-best, capping her career with a 9.483.

“Carly just kept going each week and got better each time on floor,” Tews said.

Mercedes Westereng was 12th (9.317) and Ashley Kronebusch tied for 23rd (9.083).

Westereng just missed placing in the all around, coming in 16th, while Kronebusch was 24th.

Nelson, Westereng and Kronebusch are all seniors.

“The older girls did a good job. It was very nice they could go out the way they did,” Tews said.

Sophomore Kaiann Arellano tied with Westereng for 21st on the vault.

Erin Hillerud, an eighth-grader, tied for 21st on bars.

“It was really fun the last two days to see our kids’ names up there jumping around on the leaderboard,” Tews said. “When we look back at it the girls can feel pretty good about what they accomplished this year.”
