It is official: the last three months’ warm temperatures are destined for the record books.
“Jamestown tied the second warmest winter on record,” said Rob Kupec, meteorologist with Forum Communications Co. “We averaged 21.7 degrees for the months of December, January and February.”
That three-month period makes up what is called meteorological winter and is a standard for weather statistics. The average temperature is determined by averaging the high and low of each day to determine the daily average and then averaging the daily averages of the three-month period.
This year tied the winter of 1986-1987.
Meteorologists have to look back more than 80 years to find a warmer winter.
“The warmest was the winter of 1930 to 1931,” Kupec said. “That winter had an average of 22.8 degrees so, on average, was more than a degree warmer, which is phenomenal for a season-long average.”
Kupec said reliable weather statistics for Jamestown go back to 1893. In that 119-year period, the average winter temperature in Jamestown is 11.6 degrees.
