Jamestown senior Willy Marler’s goal of winning two state titles in his final year didn’t come to fruition, but he still walked away from the pool with a runner-up and a third-place finish to round out a solid high school swimming career.

Marler placed second in the 100 free to Williston’s Ben Bolinske, and third in the 50 free behind second-place finisher Bolinske and champion Josh Riepl of Bismarck on Saturday at the final day of the state swimming and diving meet in Mandan.

Marler, who was seeded first in the 100 free, also helped the 200 freestyle relay to a fifth-place finish with a time of 1:33.35 and guided the 400 free relay to seventh place.

Marler, who was named first-team all-state, said he isn’t planning on continuing his swimming career in college. Instead he is going to focus on an agriculture degree at North Dakota State.

Colt Rasmussen, who also swam legs in both top 10 relay teams, won the consolation heat in the 500 free for a ninth-place finish. He also finished 10th in the 200 free to help him land a spot on the all-state second-team.

Hunter Munson led the Blue Jays on the diving board with a score of 348.45 to place him seventh, while Riley Thom and Brett Goehner finished 12th and 14th, respectively.

Hunter Boehm placed 14th in the 50 free and Braydon Love finished 16th in the 200 free to help the Blue Jays to a ninth-place team finish with a total score of 137.

Fargo North and West Fargo tied for the team title with 286 points apiece.

Bismarck recorded the most state titles as a team with four, while Fargo North had three. Obi Obembe led the Spartans with two individual titles of his own, including a state record-shattering performance in the 100 backstroke.

Bismarck’s Ian Ballantyne won the 100 breaststroke and helped the 200 free and 200 medley relay teams to state titles. He was named the Senior Athlete of the Year, while the Demons’ Loic Joseph was named the Coach of the Year.
