There will be a new state champion in Class B girls’ basketball.

Top-ranked Carrington was outscored 14-4 in the fourth quarter by Midkota as the Mustangs stunned the No. 1-ranked Cardinals 49-46 in semifinal action of the Region 4 tournament in Devils Lake on Tuesday night.

Carrington, which lost for just the second time in 24 games, led 44-42 with 3:30 to play in the final quarter, but star center Emily Thompson fouled out and the Cardinals were outscored 7-2 the rest of the way.

Shaye Ronningen led Midkota with 20 points. Emily Berge added 17 points, 11 rebounds and 5 steals.

Thompson, a senior, poured in 23 points to lead all scorers for Carrington before fouling out.

Midkota faces the winner of North Star and Lakota-Adams-Edmore in the region championship game on Thursday night.
