Roughriders, Deacons into Class A title tilt

Mack Arvidson had 21 points and six rebounds to lead Grand Forks Red River into the title game of the North Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament with a 69-55 semifinal win over Mandan on Friday.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Mack Arvidson had 21 points and six rebounds to lead Grand Forks Red River into the title game of the North Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament with a 69-55 semifinal win over Mandan on Friday.

Arvidson was 7-for-14 from the field and had two of the Roughriders’ four 3-pointers.

Red River (22-2) led 31-19 at the half and stretched the lead over 20 points in the second half. The Roughriders were 23-for-29 from the free throw line.

John Hoplin chipped in 13 points.

Mandan (18-6), which came into the tournament as the West Region’s top team, got a team-high 16 points and four steals from Erron Collins.

Devin Coyle added 13 points and Seth Westby 12 for the Braves, who made just 20 of 63 shots from the field.

Fargo Shanley 73,

Wahpeton 41

A fast start propelled Fargo Shanley to a 73-41 semifinal victory over Wahpeton on Friday at the North Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament.

The Deacons (19-5) raced out to a double-digit lead in the opening minutes and rolled to a spot in the state title game. It will be Shanley’s first appearance in the finals since the Deacons won back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998.

Five players scored in double figures for the East Region tournament champs. A.J. Jacobson led the way with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Shanley will face Grand Forks Red River, the East Region regular-season champ, in the title game.

Jeremy Bontjes led Wahpeton (17-7) with 11 points. The Huskies will take on Mandan in the third-place game.

Bismarck 71, Minot 61

Dexter Werner powered Bismarck to a 71-61 consolation semifinal victory over Minot on Friday at the North Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament.

Werner, a Mr. Basketball finalist, scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Demons (20-4). Tyler Schafer added 22 points and Jaxon Fitterer 11 for Bismarck.

Brandon VanDusen led Minot (13-11) with 16 points. Marcus Quist added 12 points and Kyle Gerding 11 for the Magicians.

Bismarck will take on Bismarck St. Mary’s for fifth place.

St. Mary’s 66,

West Fargo 61

Ben Weisbeck had 23 points and seven rebounds as Bismarck St. Mary’s stayed alive in the North Dakota boys Class A basketball tournament with a 66-61 win over West Fargo on Friday.

Weisbeck was 8-for-14 from the field and made all of his six free throws for the Saints (15-9), who advanced to the fifth-place game. St. Mary’s was 19-for-23 from the free throw line to offset 38 percent shooting from the field. Darius Sparks added 16 points and Preston Tescher had three of the Saints’ seven 3-pointers. Justin Heisler led the Packers (12-12) in scoring with 15 points. Travis Schock chipped in 11 points off the bench. West Fargo’s bench outscored St. Mary’s bench 24-9.
