Morton County ND getting 2 new grain elevators

By this time next year, Morton County should have two grain elevators less than 30 miles apart capable of loading out a 110-car shuttle train.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — By this time next year, Morton County should have two grain elevators less than 30 miles apart capable of loading out a 110-car shuttle train.

The Bismarck Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/zTeJeL) that the super grain trains are preferred by BNSF Railway for efficiency over the long hauls, especially to coastal export markets. The railroad offers a freight discount that grain handlers can pass on to producers.

Southwest Grain, a cooperative headquartered near Taylor, plans to spend $20 million to build a shuttle elevator just east of New Salem. Construction on the 1.2-million-bushel facility has not started.

And Archer Daniels Midland is building a 2.6 million bushel-capacity elevator on the outskirts of Hebron.

ADM had expected the facility to be complete by June, but the project is just starting to take shape.
