Shirvani hired as new ND university chancellor
A California university president says he's eager to take his new job as chancellor of North Dakota's university system.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A California university president says he's eager to take his new job as chancellor of North Dakota's university system.
North Dakota's Board of Higher Education voted Tuesday to hire Hamid Shirvani for the position. Shirvani's starting date is July 1, but he says he'll start getting into his new job right away.
The board interviewed four finalists Tuesday before voting 5-3 to hire Shirvani. The three dissenters favored Nebraska education administrator Marshall Hill.
Shirvani's supporters say he's a strong leader who is suited to carry out change in North Dakota's university system. The system includes 11 public colleges and has about 49,000 students.
The 61-year-old Shirvani is now president of California State University Stanislaus in Turlock, in California's Central Valley. He'll succeed retiring Chancellor William Goetz.
