Candidate cited for drinking to stay in race

A North Dakota House candidate from Grand Forks says he'll stay in the race after being cited earlier this month for underage drinking.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota House candidate from Grand Forks says he'll stay in the race after being cited earlier this month for underage drinking.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that 19-year-old John Mitzel is a Republican candidate in a Grand Forks district that includes the UND campus and surrounding neighborhoods.

District court filings show Mitzel was cited and arrested for minor in consumption of alcohol on March 2. The Fargo native is a UND sophomore studying political science and banking and financial economics.

He says he was a passenger in a vehicle pulled over on University Avenue and takes responsibility for what happened.

He says he will plead guilty at his initial court date on April 3 but stay in the race.
