No team scores were kept, but just brushing off some of the rust was the main objective for the Jamestown boys’ track and field team during Thursday’s season opener.
The Blue Jays opened the season outdoors in Bismarck with a small team because of requirement issues with some of the athletes, but as for the athletes that did participate, JHS coach Ken Gardner was pleased with what he saw.
“We didn’t have that many competing at varsity because some of the athletes didn’t get their nine practices in before because of winter sports,” said Gardner. “But the ones that did compete did pretty well.”
John Nagel kicked off the season in style by tying for second place in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 4 inches.
“That was good to see,” Gardner said. “There wasn’t a high number of competitors, but it was still good to see.”
Nagel also helped the 4x800-meter relay to a third-place finish with a time of 9:10.11.
Matt Kopp took home two fifth-place finishes for the Blue Jays in the 55-meter hurdles and the 200 hurdles, while Ashton Johnson placed sixth in the shot put.
“It’s nice to get out and start competing,” said Gardner. “We were just thankful to get things rolling.”
The Blue Jay girls kick off their season today in Bismarck and then both squads head to Aberdeen, S.D. for the John Huth Invitational on Mar. 22.
