Jays get off to solid start

Getting outside early went quite nicely for the JHS girls’ track and field teams.
Coach Arnie Falk’s Blue Jays racked up two wins, three seconds and two more thirds at the March Madness Meet at the Bismarck Community Bowl on Friday.
Alison Allmer started fast in the mile while thrower Kate Roscoe dominated the javelin to account for the two Jamestown victories on the sunny and warm afternoon.
“It went pretty well. We had a number of great individual performances,” Falk said. “To get outside this early was unique, but it went well. With this now we can set some goals.”
Allmer ran away from the field in the mile, blitzing the 1600 field in a time of 5:35.59, nearly 10 seconds quicker than anybody else. She also ran a 61 second split in the Jays’ fifth-place 1600 relay team.
“She’s running good. She has a little more confidence and she started off awfully well,” Falk said.
Roscoe’s winning heave of 107 feet, 10 inches was dampened slightly when she suffered a knee injury in the event.
“She’s worked so hard in the weight room all summer and winter and you can tell it’s really paid off,” Falk said. “It was a sour way for the meet to end. Hopefully it’s not something too serious, but we’ll have to see.”
Jenna Stilwell had a big day in the jumps.
The athletic freshman had the lone state-qualifying effort, doing so in the triple jump with a second-place leap of 34-4. She was also second in the high jump (4-9) and seventh in the long jump (15-3).
The Blue Jays have not had a premium sprinter in recent years, but McKayla Orr is likely to change that. She finished second in the 100 to only Morgan Milbrath of Minot.
“She’s a bona fide sprinter,” Falk said.
Orr was also third in the triple and sixth in the long jump.
Another highlight came in the 400 where Siri Jystad placed sixth.
The Blue Jays are back in action on March 22 in Aberdeen.
From Thursday’s boys’ meet, Ashton Johnson placed sixth in the long jump, not the shot put.
