Bravo to United Way’s contributors

The Jamestown Sun hands out these bravos this week:

*Bravo to the planned resumption in the search for missing U.S. troops in North Korea. There were 5,300 troops listed as missing in action after the Korean War in North Korea, according to the Associated Press. The search for missing troops is expected to begin again in April.

*Bravo to those who contributed money to United Way, which surpassed its fundraising goal of $185,000. The organization, which provides funding to organizations such as the Salvation Army, RSVP+, American Red Cross and others, raised $193,000. The fact that 99 percent of the money raised through United Way stays local means it will provide direct assistance where it’s needed the most.

*Bravo to Girl Scouts, which is celebrating 100 years of existence this month. Millions of American girls have taken part in Girl Scouts, whose mission is to build character, confidence and courage in them, to help them reach their fullest potential, develop their values and improve society, among others.

*Bravo to those people who have helped a dog with a knee defect to lead a more normal life. Millie, a toy poodle, was given to the Humane Society of Richland and Wilkin counties, and staff there enlisted the help of a veterinarian to give the 6-year-old dog the medical care needed to improve her quality of life. Millie had no use of her back legs. A veterinarian donated most of the costs of surgery and donors have stepped up, providing funds to help pay for her care. One knee has been fixed and a second surgery is scheduled in the near future.

*Bravo to the Jimmie women’s basketball team, which finished its season at 27-5, a new school record for wins in a season. The team also won a game at the national tournament in March for the second time in history.
