MAFB impact estimated at $493 million

Minot Air Force Base provided a $493 million boost to the area's economy in fiscal 2011, down slightly from an estimated $514 million the previous year.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Minot Air Force Base provided a $493 million boost to the area's economy in fiscal 2011, down slightly from an estimated $514 million the previous year.

Lt. Col. Barry Eddins with the base's 5th Comptroller Squadron cites a decline in payroll and construction for the drop. But he says the base will continue to have a positive economic impact on Minot and the surrounding region.

The base has had a steady growth in population since 2007, mainly due to the addition of a second B-52 bomber squadron. The population at the end of the fiscal year last September was just under 13,000 people.
