The North Dakota Farmers Union and the National Farmers Union announced their support of an appeal of a ruling by the World Trade Organization against the United States. The ruling concerned the U.S.’s implementation of the country-of-origin labeling or COOL law.
Ron Kirk, U.S. trade representative, is appealing a decision of the WTO in a case filed by Canada and Mexico preventing the implementation of the COOL regulation in the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002.
“As an organization, we have fought for 20 years for COOL and believe it should be administered in all instances,” said Elwood “Woody” Barth, NDFU president.
COOL regulations require food products be labeled with the country raw materials in the food product originated.
