Minn. man drowns in ND as he tries to flee police

Authorities have recovered the body of a 23-year-old Minnesota man who drowned in the Red River as he was attempting to flee police.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Authorities have recovered the body of a 23-year-old Minnesota man who drowned in the Red River as he was attempting to flee police.

Fargo police say an officer was investigating the man for possible theft when he fled on foot at about 4 a.m. Wednesday. The man then entered the Red River and attempted to swim from the North Dakota side to the Minnesota side, presumably to escape.

But officers say the Moorhead man appeared to become tired and drowned. His body was located and recovered at about 7 a.m.

Family members have requested his name be withheld so they can first notify extended family.
