Sun wins 10 awards in AP contest

The Jamestown Sun received 10 awards in the Associated Press’ 2012 Great Plains newspaper contest. This is the third year for the Great Plains contest which combines entries from three states — Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota — into three circulation-based groups. The Jamestown Sun competed in the medium-size group.

The Jamestown Sun received 10 awards in the Associated Press’ 2012 Great Plains newspaper contest. This is the third year for the Great Plains contest which combines entries from three states — Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota — into three circulation-based groups. The Jamestown Sun competed in the medium-size group.

John M. Steiner took eight photo awards in the contest. He took first-, second- and third-place awards in the spot news photo category with his photo of a crash involving a vehicle and a child a bicycle taking the top prize. He received first-place and second-place awards in the sports action photo category with first place going to his picture of Jamestown College’s women’s basketball victory in the 2011 NAIA tournament. He also received second-place awards in feature and general news photo categories. He placed third in the feature photo category.

Reporter Kari Lucin received a third-place award for her story on 19 dachshunds being rescued by Prairie Paws Rescue.

Sun staff also received a third-place award for its editorial, “Give early retirees a consistent plan” on teacher retirement.
