Lawyer: NY finds no child abuse by Douglas Kennedy

An attorney for a Kennedy heir who tried to take his newborn son from a New York maternity ward says an investigation has found no evidence of child abuse.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — An attorney for a Kennedy heir who tried to take his newborn son from a New York maternity ward says an investigation has found no evidence of child abuse.

The attorney says the state's child protection agency sent a letter to Douglas Kennedy, son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. The letter said a report of child abuse had been determined to be unfounded.

The agency investigated after Kennedy was charged with child endangerment in February. He had tried to take the newborn from the maternity ward at a hospital in suburban Mount Kisco.

The lawyer says the agency's investigation is separate from the criminal prosecution and doesn't negate the endangerment charge. But he said he hopes prosecutors will take it into consideration and dismiss the charge.
