Jays face loaded West teams

Not even the best of the West could slow down Alison Allmer. The Jamestown High School junior swept the 800 and 1600 at the Dick Karlgaard Invite on Thursday at the Bismarck Community Bowl. Nobody in the West can hang with either of Bismarck or Century’s team numbers on both the boys’ and girls’ sides, but Allmer led the way for the Blue Jays.

The half-mile went right down to the tape as Allmer nipped Bismarck’s Brittany Brownotter, 2:25.56 to 2:25.85.

It wasn’t as close in the mile as she pulled away from the field, winning in 5:40.05 — 8 seconds quicker than anyone else.

Both JHS teams placed fifth.

McKayla Orr was fourth in both the 100 and triple jump.

Kylee Voight crossed fourth in the 400 and Siri Jystad was seventh.

Jenna Stilwell was fifth in the high jump and seventh in the triple.

Kelsey Urquhart led the throwers with an eighth in the shot.

The boys started with a solid effort in the 3200 relay as Jake Nieland, Phillip Manley, John Nagel and Colt Rasmussen teamed for a season-best time of 8:53.11.

“We keep dropping time on that one. It was windy so that was an especially good effort,” JHS coach Ken Gardner said.

Nagel went right from running 800 meters to the long jump and posted a solid fourth-place effort of 19.6.50.

“You don’t always have a lot of snap left in your legs after that one, so that was a really nice job by John there,” Gardner said.

Manley also had a fourth individually, doing so in the 3200.

Matt Kopp placed in both hurdle races, topped by his seventh in the 300.

Jordan Thoreson cleared 47-feet again in the shot put, good for fifth.

“It was good to get a meet in before Easter,” Gardner said. “It’s tough out West. Bismarck and Century are both very, very good. But it’s good to get out there and compete against tough schools. It’s good to have somebody to go after.”

Next week, both teams compete in meets at Valley City. The girls go first on Tuesday then the boys on Thursday.
