New ‘super PAC’ to help Berg campaign

A new group says it will be spending money to help Republican Rick Berg’s U.S. Senate campaign. The “super PAC” was formed last week. It is called the Freedom Pioneers Action Network. Its treasurer is Justin Brasell. Brasell managed South Dakota Sen. John Thune’s re-election campaign last year.

BISMARCK (AP) — A new group says it will be spending money to help Republican Rick Berg’s U.S. Senate campaign.

The “super PAC” was formed last week. It is called the Freedom Pioneers Action Network. Its treasurer is Justin Brasell. Brasell managed South Dakota Sen. John Thune’s re-election campaign last year.

Super PACs are able to raise and spend unlimited amounts of money to support political candidates.

Berg campaign spokesman Chris Van Guilder said he doesn’t know about the group’s plans. Super PACs are barred from coordinating with individual campaigns.

Berg is running against Republican Duane Sand for the GOP U.S. Senate nomination in June.

A spokesman for Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Heidi Heitkamp said Berg’s been doing the bidding of Washington Republican leaders and now they’re rewarding him.
