Eighteen Jamestown German students attended a language immersion program March 2-4 at the Concordia Language Village of “Waldsee” (Lake of the Woods), near Bemidji, Minn.

The theme for the weekend was “Switzerland.” The students participated in many language-oriented activities, all conducted in German. The activities included games, geography, song, skits and dance, including the waltz. Many activities focused on learning “Switzerdeutsch.” or Swiss-German, a dialect of the German language spoken in Switzerland. Swiss-style cuisine was served for all meals during the weekend, fully immersing the students in the culture and preparing them for travel to a German-speaking country.

The students raise money for transportation and weekend attendance through German Club fundraisers held throughout the year.

They were accompanied on the trip by their chaperone and German teacher, Cody Mickelson, who was honored during the weekend with a Citation of Excellence for five consecutive years of attending the Language Village with a student group.

The Concordia Language Villages are operated in partnership with Concordia College of Moorhead, Minn.
