It’s the last week on the job for the police chief who led Minot through the historic Souris River flood.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — It’s the last week on the job for the police chief who led Minot through the historic Souris River flood.

Jeff Balentine retires Friday after 31 years with the Minot Police Department. He was chief during last year’s devastating flood, and also served on the force during the 2002 train derailment and anhydrous ammonia spill in the city.

The 57-year-old Balentine told the Minot Daily News that retiring is difficult but the right move for him. He said last year’s flood drained him, and he wants to get out of the law enforcement field. He said he’s had inquiries from companies to do security work in the Oil Patch, and he isn’t interested. Instead, he plans to look for a part-time job that will enable him to travel.
