ND county hopes somebody runs for prosecutorPembina County doesn't have a candidate yet to run for county prosecutor this fall.
CAVALIER, N.D. (AP) — Pembina County doesn't have a candidate yet to run for county prosecutor this fall.
County officials are wondering whether a former state's attorney who quit his job in February will run again. Stuart Askew resigned just before a hearing to kick him out of office.
The deadline for filing to run in the June primary election is at 4 p.m. Friday.
Walsh County prosecutor Barb Whelan is filling in as Pembina County prosecutor.
Whelan has asked Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem for a legal opinion about whether Askew is eligible to go on the ballot this year.
She wants to know if Askew runs, whether the process to remove him from office will start up again.
The Grand Forks Herald reports Askew didn't return telephone calls asking for comment.
