Rain didn’t let the Jimmies play on Sunday, but the weather was ideal Saturday and Jamestown College capitalized.

The Jimmies won a pair of tight games in Valley City, sweeping the Vikings 5-3 in 8 innings and 4-2 in the nightcap.

With the wins, the Jimmies have won 8 straight and improved to 23-11-1 overall and 4-0 in the DAC.

“It was two good wins for us. We found a way to win both ball games,” JC coach Tom Hager said. “We’re rolling along pretty good right now, but I think our guys understand that everybody’s got to bring their game (tomorrow) and later in the week. Right now we’re doing a pretty good job of doing that.”

Sunday’s games will be played today at Jack Brown Stadium beginning at 3 p.m.

JC 5, VCSU 3

After rallying to tie it in the top of the sixth, the Jimmies won it in the eighth, getting some help from the Vikings in the process.

Jakob Ohmann singled to lead off the eighth, but that was the only hit of the inning. Valley City State committed two errors in the frame, the first allowing Ohmann to score the go-ahead run. Later, Nico Moreno scored an insurance run when Johnathan Minchella’s fly ball was misplayed.

Derek Wallace drew the Jimmies in the sixth. Down 3-1, Wallace belted a 2-run home run, coming right after Max Boe had reached on another Valley City State error.

Wallace and Mitch Stevens each had two hits in the win.

Paul Roers worked six strong innings, but reliever Nick Smart got the win with a dominant 2-inning stretch where he did not allow a hit with five strikeouts.

Roers fanned six and walked just one in six innings.

“We had our backs against the wall but we found a way to get out of some jams and get a couple of runs when we really needed them,” Hager said. “Good teams find a way to win in a variety of ways and I felt like (Saturday) we did exactly that.”

JC 4, VCSU 2

It was more last at-bat magic in Game 2.

Tied 2-all after six innings, Kyle Mallory singled home Ben Holen and Joe Perez with two outs to put the Jimmies in front.

Kacy Gardiner worked a clean bottom of the seventh to notch his first save.

Wallace had another big game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double to score Boe in the top of the second.

Ohmann had the other RBI for JC, doubling in Perez in the top of the fifth to put the Jimmies up 2-1.

Perez and Mallory each had 2-hit games.

Blake Stewart, the second of three JC pitchers, worked around 3 hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings to get the win.

“We got great contributions from our bullpen in both games and were able to come up with enough timely hits,” Hager said.

The Vikings had 11 hits in the game.
