It was a mixed bag in the season-opener for the Blue Jay boys’ golf team.

Their team score was far better than their first time out last season, but with raised expectations, there is work to be done after a shaky seventh-place finish at the Minot Invitational.

“341 is not going to cut it this season, no doubt about that,” coach Dean Kraft said. “I think all the guys agree that we left a lot of strokes out there.”

Eighth-grader Austin Rene and sophomore Brandon Stahlhut each carded 84s, but finished out of the top 10.

Nick Stockert (86) and Jakobi Lux (87) rounded out the top five. Lux had a strong back nine.

It took a little while for the entire team to settle in.

“We were too amped to start the day, our swing tempo was way off to start. Once the four guys that scored well settled down, they could control the ball a lot better, especially off the tee,” Kraft said. “We need to start our rounds with more composure like the veteran team that we are.”

They also struggled collectively with their short game, and had trouble avoiding big numbers.

They were OK on the green, though.

“We putted very well as a team, it’s something we work on every practice,” Kraft said. “That can only help build confidence.”

The Blue Jays were seventh out of nine with a 341.

Bismarck nipped St. Mary’s for the team title, 300-304.

Jake DeForest of St. Mary’s fired a 70 to win medalist honors by three strokes.

Next up is the Dickinson Invitational at Heart River Golf Course, which is the site of both the West Region and state meets.
