Blue Jays fare well at meet

John Nagel, Ashton Johnson and Nathan Willer each won events to lead the Blue Jays at the Carrington Sports Boosters Track Meet on Tuesday.

Nagel went 19-5.50 to win the long jump to go along with his third in the 200.

Johnson took top honors in the triple jump, going 41-2.50. He also took fourth in the long jump.

Willer was 10 feet better than anybody else in the discus, spinning in 147 feet. Teammate Jordan Thoreson was third. He also was second in the shot put (46-9).

In the hurdles, Matt Kopp was third in the 110 and fourth in the 300 hurdles.

Other placers for the Blue Jays were Phillip Manley in the 800 (3rd) and Michael Hust in the 200 (5th).

Jamestown was third team-wise with 104.5 points.

Carrington was led by James Jones, who placed first in the high jump.

Scott Burnham was second in the high jump and third in the long jump.

Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal’s Cole Diede ran second in the 800.

On the girls’ side, Carrington captured first place with 125 points.

Josey Page and the Cardinals’ strong throwing contingent led the way.

Page took the 200 and 400 meter dashes in state-qualifying times.

Central Prairie’s Courtney Heupel was second in the quarter-mile.

Kayla Hochhalter of Carrington won the shot and was second in the discus and javelin.

Sierra Rosenau, the state champion in the javelin, threw the spear almost 134 feet.

The Cardinals also won the 800 and 1600 relays.

Shaylene Helmer of Griggs County Central won the discus ahead of Hochhalter and Bailey Retzlaff.

Jamestown got all its points from Jenna Stilwell, who won the triple jump and came in fifth in the other two jumps.

Harvey-Wells County got runner-up finishes from Cassidy Unterseher (100 hurdles) and Kara Fike in the 300 hurdles, which was won by Kidder County-Napoleon’s Sadie Roehrich.
