Optimist Club honors athletes

Jamestown High School’s Kadie Anderson and Ashton Johnson, along with Jamestown College’s Rachel Ivelia and Nick Smart, were selected as the Jamestown Optimist Club’s Athletes of The Week.

Jamestown High School’s Kadie Anderson and Ashton Johnson, along with Jamestown College’s Rachel Ivelia and Nick Smart, were selected as the Jamestown Optimist Club’s Athletes of The Week.

Anderson, a freshman on the Blue Jay softball team, helped the program to its first varsity victory in its inaugural season last week. Anderson went 3-for-4 from the plate in a win over Belcourt.

Johnson, a sophomore on the Blue Jay boys’ track and field team, scored 27.5 points at the Hi-Liner Invitational track meet held in Valley City on April 12. He won the high jump and the triple jump, placed fourth in the long jump and was on the first-place 800-meter relay team.

Ivelia, a junior shortstop on the Jimmie softball team, played errorless ball and rapped out 7 hits in 18 at bats for a .388 batting average for the week. A native of Snohomish, Wash., Ivelia scored 4 runs and drove in 6 runs, while launching 3 home runs and a double.

Smart, a sophomore pitcher on the Jimmie baseball team, earned a win and a save on the mound during the week. Smart pitched 3 innings in relief, striking out 6 while allowing one earned run on 2 hits.

The Jimmie baseball team completed a 3-0 week.
