Schloegel presents senior thesis and reception next week

Elizabeth Schloegel, Jamestown College senior art major, will host an invitation-only reception for her senior art show on Thursday, April 26 at the Reiland Fine Arts Center Gallery. The Jamestown native is active in Jamestown and at JC where she has made the dean’s list and received honors since her freshman year.

Her artwork goes up tomorrow, following College Fellow, senior Tara Sluik’s show, and will remain on display for only a week, so be sure to stop in now and next week and see the amazing pieces both Sluik and she have done over the tenure of their education.

The vivacious brunette is one of several graduating fine art majors who has been accepted into graduate school. Schloegel was accepted to, and will begin her next four years at Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Schloegel began in science in order to give her the basis she needed for graduate school. Her mom is a nurse, so she has had a lifetime of knowing what it is to care for illness and the time and education it takes to reach that level of knowledge. But her interests are more along the four-legged animals as opposed to people. She worked at Waggin’ Tails for more than five years and was a volunteer at several veterinary clinics before that. I know first-hand the tenderness and care she gives animals because she cared for my dog Alexi the last day of his life.

Many of her art pieces express the love and concern she has for her biology critters. She and several other art majors kept the quad on campus pretty worn out, running back and forth from Orlady (science) Hall to the Reiland Center. It has been such a delight to watch her and a handful of young women juggle their love of the sciences with their talent and love of fine art. It makes for some very well-rounded young people who are well-suited to function in roles of varied importance following their graduate work.

And well-rounded she has been. Schloegel has been doing the cartoons for the college newspaper, “The Collegian” for the last four years. She took up teaching the JC Belly Dance Troupe along with Kristi Skinner (class of 2011) following Skinner leaving for grad school. As president of JC’s Art Club she has led the group in civic volunteer work and contributing on and off campus to many creative endeavors.

She was/is JC Art Department’s College Fellow (meaning she can teach), is the co-manager of the gallery and has assisted with the creative end as well as instllation of the annual February Gallery opener/scholarship competition. She conducted painting workshops for high school students during the opener.

Schloegel’s exhibit will come down on April 27. She will display photographs, paintings, drawings, pottery pieces, some sculptures and mixed media works. Some of her art pieces will be for sale. The 30 piece show will cover her years at JC, and will reflect her varied interests. She graduated from Jamestown High School and is a member of St. James Basilica. Like so many of the young women graduating this semester she is a scholar and artist whose future is wide open.
