Opinion Corner: Jimmies a good bargain

Even with a real spring, the college baseball and softball seasons go really quick.

So fast in fact that today is the last chance to watch the Jimmie baseball and softball teams without having to shove several gallons of nearly $4.00 gas into the tank to do so.

Both teams have back-to-back doubleheaders against Dickinson State, all beginning at 1 p.m. with the exception of the baseball games today which start at 2.

As usual, both teams are having strong seasons.

The baseball team is 6-0 in the DAC and is in good position to win the final conference championship.

The softball nine trails the Blue Hawks by two games, so they can win it outright with a sweep, or tie for it by going 3-1, in which case they would own the tiebreaker over Dickinson State.

Watching Kate Johnson would be worth the time all by itself.

The slugging junior from Victoria, British Columbia, owns a whopping 19-game hitting streak. She’s ninth in the NAIA in RBIs per game at 1.324, she has 49 of them in just 37 games to go along with 9 home runs. If those numbers don’t get her the MVP of the DAC I don’t know what will.

Both teams have the DAC tournaments next weekend followed by the A.I.I./Independent qualifiers, which will require lengthy road trips.

The softball team goes to Columbus, Ga., the first weekend in May, while the baseball tournament is in San Marcos, California.

Those two tournaments will give the budgets of both programs a work out, but none of us have that excuse this weekend — getting in is free of charge, so go and check them out.
