Murder trial in ND severed head case goes to jury

The case of a Cooperstown man accused of killing and beheading a North Dakota State University researcher has gone to a jury.

COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) — The case of a Cooperstown man accused of killing and beheading a North Dakota State University researcher has gone to a jury.

Daniel Wacht has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of 54-year-old Kurt Johnson, whose severed head was found in Wacht's basement.

Johnson's body has not been found.

Prosecutor Marina Spahr told jurors Tuesday morning that there are “layers of evidence” to prove that Wacht was guilty.

Defense attorney Steven Mottinger said in his closing that the key witness against Wacht is a convicted felon who is not credible and authorities did a poor job of handling evidence.
