S.D. town takes pride in Rieff

The southeast South Dakota town of Parkston suddenly has a lot more Detroit Lions fans.

PARKSTON, S.D. (AP) — The southeast South Dakota town of Parkston suddenly has a lot more Detroit Lions fans.

The Lions on Thursday drafted Parkston graduate Riley Reiff in the first round, with the 23rd overall pick. The 6-foot-5, 313-pound offensive lineman was a standout at Iowa, starting 37 of 39 games for the Hawkeyes before deciding to skip his senior season.

The Argus Leader newspaper reports that about 200 people packed Boog’s Bar in Parkston on Thursday night to watch the draft. Reiff eventually put in an appearance, telling the crowd that he takes a lot of pride in being from South Dakota.

Cathy Kuzman was one of Reiff’s elementary school teachers. She says she’s a Lions fan now.

About 1,500 people live in Parkston.
