Worth the wait: Jimmies host Al Cassell Relays

The 1-day wait proved to be worth it for both Jamestown College track and field teams.

The 1-day wait proved to be worth it for both Jamestown College track and field teams.

The Jimmie men collected four first-place finishes and the women had three more at the 58th Annual Al Cassell Relays on Sunday.

Pushed back 1 day in hopes of better weather, they got that and good competition from several area NCAA Division II, III and NAIA teams.

“We got a lot better weather than I thought we were going to get,” JC women’s coach Jim Clark said. “Overall, it was a pretty good day weather-wise and results-wise.”

The JC men had a pair of 1-2 finishes on the day.

The hurdling contingent was again strong led by sophomore Trent Roemmich, who swept both the 110 and 400.

In the high hurdles, he led a 1-2-3-4 JC finish in 15.52 seconds. His older brother Scott was second (15.79), J.T. Petsch was third (16.22) and the youngest Roemmich (Derek) was fourth in 16.42.

In the 800, former Blue Jay Spencer Kamoni won a showdown with teammate Nathan Christensen as the two crossed in 1:58.97 and 1:59.74, respectively.

The Jimmies had a handful of other top 3 performances sprinkled in.

They won the 1600 relay as Scott Roemmich, William Swanson, Jarann Johnson and Brent Jansen teamed for a 3:28.57.

Swanson beat Johnson in the 400, no small feat, 51.80 to 52.11 in a solid field.

Rob Nelson and Jay Bachmann had the top throwing marks. Nelson was third in the discus (155-8), while Bachman went 162-6 for third in the javelin.

Kayla Roemmich had another good day in the field for the women.

The eldest of the Roemmichs on campus, Kayla had season-best throws in both the discus (137-11) — which she won — and the shot where she was over 40 feet for the first time.

Clark also singled out his seniors, led by Mallory Johannes, who won the high jump by clearing 5-1, a PR.

Mallory Souder ran three good races, led by a third in the 1500.

Courtney Oliver had her best pole vault (8-9.75), while Ashley Cooper had a solid 100 hurdles (16.54).

Taylor Brown (high jump) and Taylor Miller (200) each recorded runner-up marks.

Jolynn Warnes and Casey Geffre each had solid all-around days in their events as they continue preparation for future multi-event competitions.

Kayla Byle led the way in the 400 hurdles.

“It was a pretty solid day all around,” Clark said.

The Jimmies will compete in the Ron Masanz Invite in Moorhead on Friday, but with a limited team due to graduation ceremonies the same day.
