Cards sweep Stutsman Co.

Madison Wendel and Josey Page were virtually unbeatable at the Stutsman County tack meet in Carrington on Tuesday.

The two Cardinal standouts combined for six of Carrington’s first-place finishes with three each as they easily rolled to the team title with 262 points.

It was a Carrington sweep as the boys team also won. In all the two teams combined for 14 first-place finishes.

Wendel won the 100 hurdles, triple jump and long jump.

Page had state-qualifying marks in the 200 and 300 hurdles and she also claimed the 100. Jacey Engelhorn was second in the 100 and third in the 200.

The Carrington throwing contingent was dominant as usual.

Sophomore Kayla Hochhalter took top honors in the shot. She was also second in both the javelin and discus.

The javelin went to Sierra Rosenau, as it normally does.

Griggs County Central’s Shayleen Helmer bested the field in the discus.

Other area winners were Central Prairie’s Courtney Heupel in the 400, Janae Gregory of South Border in the long jump and New Rockford-Sheyenne’s Cassidy Weber led the way pole-vaulting.

Carrington’s boys racked up six first-place finishes en route to 194 points. South Border was a solid second with 151.

Cole Hendrickson accounted for two wins, taking both the 200 and javelin.

Sprinter Seth Abaurrea won the 100 and was second to Hendrickson in the 200.

Scott Burnham (long) and Riley Miller (triple) gave Carrington wins in two of the three jumps.

The Cardinals went 1-2-3-4 in the pole vault with Lane Anderson leading the way.

M.J. Stumpf of Harvey-Wells County was the meet’s other double-winner, winning the 400 and 300 hurdles. The Hornets also got a victory from Alex Lies in the 800.

South Border had three individual winners: one runner, one jumper and a thrower.

James Horner had the top mark in the shot put, while Michael Jacobson was first in the high hurdles and second in the low. The Mustangs’ other win came in the mile via Blake Bosch.
