BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The fight over the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname has cost taxpayers more than $46,000 in lawyers’ fees.
The lawsuit involved North Dakota's Board of Higher Education, the Legislature and Secretary of State Al Jaeger. Jaeger and the Legislature hired private attorneys.
Legal bills obtained by The Associated Press show the Legislature paid almost $34,000 in legal fees to its lawyers. Jaeger's attorneys cost more than $12,000. The case lasted about a month.
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem's office represented the Board of Higher Education.
The board filed the lawsuit to try to stop a vote on whether the University of North Dakota should have to keep its Fighting Sioux nickname.
The Supreme Court decided to let the vote go ahead. It will be held June 12.
