Brandon Stahlhut’s 85 paced the Jamestown boys golf team to seventh place at the Turtle Mountain Invite on Friday.
Jamestown coach Dean Kraft said Stahlhut, who placed 14th, was doing well until he ran into problems on his second nine.
“He was just (3-over) through his first nine, but struggled coming home,” he said. “We’re still waiting for that complete round to come. Hopefully, as we approach the region tournament, he will be in his best form.”
The Blue Jays tied Mandan with a team score of 365, just three strokes out for the final West Region state-meet berth. Bismarck Century won the meet with a 323, led by medalist Jacob Dehne’s 78. The Patriots had five in the top 10 including ties.
The Jays battled light rain most of the day, Kraft said, and the course provided its own challenges.
“The course plays four to five shots harder per player than the others we’ve played this season, so our scores are similar to what we have shot this season. It’s very tight, hilly, with fast and undulating greens.”
Austin Rene shot a 92 for 33rd place, while Jakobi Lux (93) and Brandon Hart (95) finished in 35th and 38th place, respectively. Ty Spitzer (97, 45th) and Nick Stockert (100, 49th) rounded out the pack.
“The team as a whole took too many big scores on holes, lots of doubles and triples,” Kraft said. “We sprayed it around way too much. We had a good game plan and the guys tried to execute it, but we didn’t get it done. I thought we did a good job of decision-making, especially off the tee. The course makes you have to play pretty conservative and execute station-to-station golf. We didn’t get it done in that respect today.”
Jamestown’s season continues at 10 a.m. today at the Williston Invite, which is being played at the Links of North Dakota golf course.
