The Jamestown High School boys golf team had three golfers shoot in the 80s, but a solid day by most of the field amid a steady rain kept the Blue Jays toward the back of the pack on Saturday.

Austin Rene tied for 14th place with an 83, as the Jays shot a 352 for eighth place in the nine-team field at the Williston Invite, played on the Links of North Dakota course.

“(We) got a little dose of Scotland at the Links,” coach Dean Kraft said. “For those who love golf and haven’t made it out there, it is a great golf course, a true hidden gem in North Dakota.”

Rene had one bad hole — a triple bogey — but was solid otherwise.

“Austin is just an eighth-grader. He shows a lot of poise and promise,” Kraft said. “You can tell he just loves golf.”

Ty Spitzer and Brandon Hart shot an 88 and 89, respectively.

“Hart just plugged away, he did a good job of keeping the ball in play on a windy day,” Kraft said. “Spitzer is a competitor plain and simple. He goes out there and does his thing. He made a couple of nice birdies, it was an encouraging round for him.”

Nick Stockert came in with a 92 to round out the scoring that made up the Jays’ total. Brandon Stahlhut and Jakobi Lux shot 95s to complete Jamestown’s scoring.

The Blue Jays are still looking to put it all together.

“As a team, we have not put together four or five good rounds at the same time. We are seeing some progress individually, we need to find a day to demonstrate it all together,” Kraft said.

Bismarck Century (313) won its fourth straight meet after taking third in the season opener at Minot. All four of the Patriots’ scorers made the top 10, three of which finished in the top five.

Bismarck High, which took second with a 320, had the medalist as Nick Nustad carded a 75.

The Jays are back in action at 10 a.m. Friday when they visit Wahpeton’s Bois de Sioux golf course. The destination was changed this past weekend after being originally scheduled for Dakota Winds Golf Course near Hankinson.
