Unseeded Julie Fuchs made sure her name was remembered by her opponents at the West Fargo Invite on Saturday.
The Jamestown High School tennis player stunned the sixth flight by knocking off her first two opponents en route to third-place honors.
She beat Emily Honl of Fargo Davies 7-5, 6-1 to open the tournament. Then, she defeated Minot’s Rachel Mattson 7-6 (8), 6-2 to get into the semifinals, where she found herself on the unfortunate end of a thriller. Fargo North’s Jessie Long won 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7).
She came back to earn third with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Casey Debeltz of Grand Forks Red River.
Jamestown finished with three points for 11th place in the 14-team field, as Fuchs’ finish was the only top-five performance for the Jays.
Also placing was unseeded Bailee Graves in third-flight action. She fell to Lydia Jacobson of Fargo North to start the tournament, but bounced back with an 8-3 win over Elli Hoge of Fargo Davies. She topped Bismarck St. Mary’s Tori Brucker 8-3 and followed that with an 8-6 win over Williston’s Jordan Hill. Shanley’s Theresa Carson won 8-2 for fifth place.
Though they didn’t all place, all six singles players won at least one match.
Doubles didn’t fare as well, as Nos. 1 and 2 lost their first two matches. At No. 3 however, Cassie Reidburn and Miah Dabill won their opener over Fargo Davies’ Abby Olson and Jenna Forknell 6-3, 6-2. They lost their next match and fell in the placement-qualifying match.
Jamestown hosts Valley City today at 4 p.m. before heading to Bismarck for the West Region tournament, which starts Thursday and runs through Saturday.
