Jays fall in qualifier

The Jamestown High School girls tennis team gave itself a fighting chance on Thursday.

The Blue Jays bounced back from a 5-0 loss to Bismarck Century in team competition during the West Region tennis tournament in Bismarck with a 4-1 win over Williston in a loser-out dual.

But the Jays ran into a tough Bismarck High squad, winning both doubles matches but falling 3-2 in a state-qualifier.

Against Century, Kara Fix gave Alyssa Wolf a battle at No. 2 singles but fell 6-1, 2-6, 6-2. Jamestown’s other close match was at No. 2 doubles where Paige Fettig and Rachel Scott teamed up to beat Erin Mullowney and Beka Horgan 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.

A dominant singles effort paced the Jays against Williston as Sarah Muhs (No. 1), Kara Fix (No. 2) and Mullowney (No. 3) all won in straight sets. Jenna Reed and Bailee Graves were also victorious, downing Cassidy Owens and Danielle Hodenfield 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.

But Jamestown couldn’t carry that singles momentum into its dual against Bismarck, as its top players took part in doubles action. Bismarck dominated all three singles matchs, and the Jays got a pair of wins from their No. 1 doubles team of Fix and Mullowney, and the No. 2 team of Muhs and Horgan.

Bismarck St. Mary’s beat Minot 3-2 to win the championship, while Century topped Mandan 4-1 in the other qualifier.

The meet continues today with singles action.
