Blue Jays drop pair to Midgets

Game 2 was better than the opener, but both ended the same way for the JHS softball team on Friday. After an 18-0 setback to start, the Blue Jays trailed only 1-0 after 4 1/2 innings to Dickinson in the second contest, but the Midgets scored 11 runs in their next two at bats and pulled away.

“We seemed to be in the game a lot more mentally,” coach Mike Soulis said. “We were throwing strikes and making them put the ball in play and we were making the plays defensively.”

The Blue Jays had the same number of hits as Dickinson (8), but the Midgets made more out of theirs.

“We’ve been hitting the ball OK. We’re not getting as many runs obviously as we’d like, but we’re making progress swinging the bats,” Soulis said.

Ashlie Meier and Kari Overby each went 2-for-4 for the Blue Jays. Morgan Geigle doubled. Sam Johnson, Kyra Dewald and Kayla Thoele also had hits.

In the opener, a 9-run second for the Midgets put it out of reach early.

“The second inning kind of set the tone,” Soulis said. “That put us way behind early.”

Meier, Dewald and Overby accounted for the three JHS hits.

With the regular season in the books, the Blue Jays open play in the 2-day West Region Tournament next, which begins Friday in Minot.
