Carrington girls roll again

Josey Page and Kayla Hochhalter each earned doubles to lead the Carrington girls’ track and field team to the South Central Region meet team title on Saturday at the Bowl.

Page swept the 100 and 200-meter dashes and was second in the 400 and 300 hurdles to help lead the Cardinals to 211.5 points, easily besting the field. Runner-up Hazen had 137.5 points.

Hochhalter comfortably won both the shot put and javelin, while teammate Sierra Rosenau earned the title in the discus. Rosenau was also second in the shot and javelin. Carly Copenhaver was third in the shot and Audra Montgomery third in the discus.

Carrington’s mile relay team of Page Anderson, Maartje Van Bedaf. Claire Endres and Hannah Lipetzky combined for a victory.

Madison Wendel was the top high jumper in the meet and earned runner-up honors in the 100 hurdles.

Central Prairie standout Courtney Heupel captured the quarter mile and added a second in the 800.

Strasburg’s Kelsie Silvernagel won the long jump as the Clippers finished fourth overall. Silvernagel also was named the region’s top senior athlete.

Kara Weigel of Zeeland won the triple jump. Strasburg’s Courtney Bubach was second.

On the boys side, Scott Burnham earned a double to lead Carrington to second place as a team.

Burnham won both the long jump and high jump.

The Cardinals also got a first from freshman Seth Abaurrea, who raced to the win in the 100. They also got a runner-up from Cole Hendrickson in the 400. Hendrickson (javelin), Riley Miller (long jump), Abaurrea (200) and Kyle Aasand (pole vault) also contributed one third apiece.

South Border got a big day from the Jacobson brothers en route to a fourth-place finish.

Michael Jacobson won the 300 hurdles and was second in the 110 hurdles and the javelin.

Adam Jacobson topped the field in the triple jump and was beaten by only Burnham in the long jump.

Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock’s Tanner Purintun nipped Michael Jacobson for top honors in the 110 hurdles. The U-Mary basketball recruit was also second in the high jump.

South Border also got seconds from James Horner in the shot and Blake Bosch in the 3,200.

Zach Six of Kidder County-Napoleon was the winner in the 400.

Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal’s Cole Diede was third in both the 800 and 300 hurdles.

The state meet begins Friday at the Bowl in Bismarck.
