GFAB economic impact drops with new mission
The military says the economic impact of the Grand Forks Air Force Base continued to slip in fiscal year 2011 and the number of airmen dropped to the lowest level in decades.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — The military says the economic impact of the Grand Forks Air Force Base continued to slip in fiscal year 2011 and the number of airmen dropped to the lowest level in decades.
The Grand Forks Herald reports that the base provided a $189 million impact to the region's economy last year. That's down 29 percent from fiscal 2010.
The base was home to air refueling tankers for 50 years until losing the mission during a round of military base closings and realignments. The last tankers left last year and the base is taking on an unmanned aircraft mission.
There were 1,204 active duty airmen assigned to the base last fiscal year. That's down 17 percent from fiscal year 2010 and about half as many in fiscal 2006.
