The Jamestown High School boys golf team struggled on Monday, carding a 368 to finish in seventh place at the Bismarck High Invite at Apple Creek Golf Course in Bismarck.
JHS coach Dean Kraft said the Blue Jays didn’t handle the elements very well.
“Wind and an unfamiliar course were double trouble for the players,” he said. “None of our guys had seen (Apple Creek) before. That makes it pretty difficult with holes that dogleg or have blind approaches. That definitely took its toll.”
Jakobi Lux finished with a team-best 90 to lead the Jays. Austin Rene had a 91 and Brandon Hart a 93. Brandon Stahlhut (94), Ty Spitzer (101) and Shane Chandler (109) rounded out the pack.
The Jays were without varsity players Nick Stockert and Brady Hoggarth, who had school commitments.
Kraft said the miscues kept mounting as the day went on.
“We let the mistakes get out of hand,” Kraft said. “We had way too many big numbers on the card.”
Bismarck St. Mary’s took the team title, shooting a 317 to beat Bismarck Century by three strokes. The Saints also had the medalist, as Jake DeForest won a two-hole playoff over Nick Nustad of Bismarck High and Tanner Halter of Dickinson. All three shot 76s.
With the Jays getting ready for the West Region meet May 30, Kraft said his squad needs to get better at recovering from mistakes.
“Heading into (the) region, we need to get much better control when we hit bad shots and minimize the damage on the hole,” he said. “Too many bogeys turn into doubles, triples or worse.”
