Cardinals, Hornets to meet in semis

Sheyenne-New Rockford edged Midkota 5-1 in the 5 vs. 4 match-up in opening round play at the Region 3 tournament on Monday. The start of the six-team tournament was pushed back from Saturday after rain postponed play in New Rockford.

Sheyenne-New Rockford edged Midkota 5-1 in the 5 vs. 4 match-up in opening round play at the Region 3 tournament on Monday.

The start of the six-team tournament was pushed back from Saturday after rain postponed play in New Rockford.

Carrington and Harvey-Wells County, the tournament’s top two seeds, advanced to the semifinals with wins later in the day.

S-NR 5, Midkota 1

Seth Gilliss held Midkota to four hits and registered eight strikeouts as the homestanding Black Sox opened with a win.

Chance LaBrie, Cobey Allmaras and Jacob Lommen each had two-hit games in the win. Gilliss added a triple as they scored two in the fourth and seventh innings.

Riley Nelson notched seven strikeouts on the mound for Midkota.

Dakota Prairie 7, L-A-E 1

Third-seeded Dakota Prairie scored all seven of its runs in innings 4-6 en route to a win over Lakota-Adams-Edmore.

Dylan Gillett surrendered just one hit in a complete-game performance. He also piled nine strikeouts in seven strong innings.

Logan Lund doubled and had two of the Knights’ eight hits.

Carrington 6, S-NR 2

Scott Engelhorn went the distance on the mound and had two hits at the plate to guide top-seeded Carrington past Sheyenne-New Rockford in quarterfinal play.

The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the third inning and then four in the fifth to pull away.

Engelhorn allowed six hits. Peter Henson also had a two-hit game.

LaBrie was a perfect 3-for-3 for the Black Sox. Ethan Haley added two hits.

Harvey-WC 4, DP 3

Austan Schmidt pitched Harvey-Wells County into a showdown with Carrington.

The junior fanned 11 Dakota Prairie batters in a 4-3 Hornet win. He allowed only three hits.

Dakota Prairie scored all of its runs in the top of the second, but were held scoreless otherwise.

The Hornets took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with two runs.

Mark Nyhus doubled and had two hits. Brock Hagemeister also had a pair of hits.
