Top-seeded Carrington is in the driver’s seat at the Region 3 tournament in New Rockford, but the host Black Sox are hanging around.
The Cardinals improved to 17-3 with a 12-4 win over Harvey-Wells County in semifinal action on Tuesday.
Peter Henson gave Carrington its second straight complete-game effort on the mound. He allowed seven hits, but the Cardinals banged out 15 hits in the win.
Taylor Skytland and Austin Hewitt each had four hits. Skytland also had four RBIs and scored three times. Two of Hewitt’s hits were doubles. Henson helped himself with a two-hit night and Marcus Hewitt added a double.
Carrington scored in every inning but the fourth.
Riley Hovland had two of the Hornets’ seven hits.
S-NR 5, Dakota Prairie 4
In the final game of the day, the host Black Sox scored four of their five runs in the bottom of the first and hung on for a one-run win.
Chance LaBrie was the story. On the mound LaBrie allowed six hits and registered nine strikeouts en route to the complete-game win. He also collected both of the Black Sox hits in the contest.
Sheyenne-New Rockford also waited out Dakota Prairie pitcher Logan Lund, who yielded eight walks over seven innings.
Dalton Flaagan went 2-for-3 for the Knights as they outhit the Black Sox, 6-2. Bryce Messner also had a pair of hits.
S-NR 10, L-A-E 0 (5 innings)
The Black Sox banged out 11 hits in the opening game of the day and rolled past Lakota-Adams-Edmore in a 5-inning game.
Seth Gilliss had two hits, doubled and scored three runs. LaBrie also had a three-hit outing with a double and Cobey Allmaras went 2-for-3.
Josh Johansen doubled to pace Lakota-Adams-Edmore.
Dakota Prairie 11, Midkota (5 innings)
Dakota Prairie came out swinging in its first game of the day.
The Knights piled up 11 hits — three by Flaagan — while Colton Anderson and Dylan Gillett added two hits apiece. Flaagan scored four of the Knights’ 11 runs. Gillett doubled. Lund, the first of three pitchers, got the win.
The Region 3 tournament concludes today with Sheyenne-New Rockford taking on Harvey-Wells County at 10 a.m. The winner gets Carrington at 12:30 p.m. and would have to beat the Cardinals twice.
The Region 3 champion advances to the state tournament in Jamestown and plays the Region 6 champion in the opening round May 31.
