Nighthawks stay alive at R8

Hettinger-Mott-Regent Scranton ended the seasons of Central Prairie and Kidder County at the Region 8 baseball tournament on Tuesday in Steele.

The Nighthawks topped Central Prairie 8-6 behind a fast start that saw them get up 7-0 in the first two innings. McCahen Schweitzer got the win.

Central Prairie was led by Thaddeus Owen’s 2-for-3 performance. Starter Chris Heinrich suffered the loss.

HMRS scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to outlast Kidder County 10-8 in its second game of the day. Kye Erickson pitched five innings of relief ball for the win.

Kidder County kept pace with the Nighthawks, even leading 7-6 until they struck for two in the fourth. The Pirates tied the game at 10 in the sixth, but HMRS found its two winning runs in the bottom half.

KC’s Matt Gross was 2-for-4 and Jayden Miller added a solo homer.

In a championship bracket contest, Washburn-Wilton-Center-Stanton downed Shiloh-Linton-Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock 8-2 to put itself in the driver’s seat.

Kirk Sailer went the distance for the win, while Shiloh’s Travis Baumiller took the loss, also going all seven innings. Sailer allowed just one hit — a double from Chance Kurle.

The winner of Thursday’s loser-out game between Shiloh and H-M-R-S has to beat W-W-C-S twice to earn a berth into the Class B state tournament. W-W-C-S needs just one win.
